There is nothing like a tomato freshly picked from the garden. Since my husband has been growing his own tomatoes for the last 10 years, I find I can hardly eat tomatoes from the grocery store or restaurants. While there are exceptions, like the ones you may be lucky enough to run across at Farmer’s Markets (like right now during tomato season) or at upscale eateries, the flavor, sweetness and texture are completely different than the average hard, mostly flavorless ones generally offered. Even better, there are endless options to use these sweet, acidic, and flavorful fruits.
simple ways to enjoy garden grown tomatoes
My family loves them in pastas (simply add chopped tomatoes, garlic, basil and olive oil and you’ve got a delectable pasta dish), tacos, homemade salsa, sandwiches and of course in any bruschetta. I recently served them as an appetizer with burrata cheese and crackers and there was nothing left on the plate!
A couple of weeks ago, my daughters were away at summer camp and my husband worked from home. Normally, I would want us to go out to lunch but he was short on time so I ended up making it at home. I threw together what we had on hand – a day old french baguette, a couple of avocados – and then went out to the garden to pick some basil and my husband’s divine tomatoes.
I added some ground black pepper, barbeque chips, and grapes and wow, such a simple and appetizing lunch!
You can find me devouring these succulent creations of nature pretty much every day through September. Take advantage of tomato season and pick some up at your local farmer’s market or from your own garden. The sky’s the limit. Let me now how you use them. Enjoy!
